- For the Caramelized Apple Layer:
- 4 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
- 3 tbsp butter
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- For the Flan Custard Layer:
- 3 large eggs room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- ¼ tsp salt
Prepare the Apples:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
Peel, core, and slice apples into ¼-inch thick wedges.
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add apples and cook for 5 minutes until slightly softened.
Sprinkle brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg over apples. Cook 3-4 minutes longer until caramelized and tender.
Arrange apples evenly in the bottom of prepared cake pan.
Make the Flan Batter:
In a large bowl, whisk eggs and sugar until light and creamy (about 2-3 minutes).
Add vanilla extract and mix well.
Alternate adding flour and milk, mixing until smooth. Start and end with flour.
Stir in melted butter and salt until fully incorporated.
Pour batter carefully over the apple layer in the cake pan.
Bake:
Bake for 35-40 minutes until top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool in pan for 15 minutes before removing.
Run a knife around the edges and invert onto a serving plate.
